306 Environment and Health (Certifications) In recent years, particular importance has been given to the production, transport, installation, and use of construction materials and products, to minimize any negative impacts on the environment and humans. One of the elements examined is the V.O.C., i.e. the Volatile Organic Compounds of the various products that are released into the air. The emissions of the building materials must be within specific limits established by national or European regulations, to be able to be produced, transported, and installed in building structures. But in addition to V.O.C. emission limits per class of products that must comply with these various construction products, there are other classification systems with specific evaluation criteria. One of the most widespread systems based on the emission rate of volatile compounds is EMICODE, which is granted by the GEV Institute after measurements are carried out in certified laboratories. EMICODE is an international environmental mark, awarded to construction products with very low emissions of volatile organic compounds. It ensures high indoor air quality, the protection of the health of the person(s) applying them and the health of the end user. According to EMICODE, some DUROSTICK products have been certified, meeting the most modern technological requirements, bearing the special mark of certification. In addition, a modern trend in environmental protection certifications is the LEED certification, which is applied in more than 100 countries around the world. Essentially, LEED is a voluntary building construction assessment system that is applied to the overall design of a building and not to individual products or services. This certification is not given to specific construction products, but these contribute, among other factors, to the accumulation of ratings (such as these are defined in the standard), for the building to be characterized as LEED compliant and to receive the relevant certification. In this assessment, DUROSTICK products of type ECO, EMICODE or EPD can participate.
