90 Repair & Renovation Guide EARTHQUAKE: CLAY TILED ROOFS special subjects Repair and restoration of detachment points of the clay tiled roof in contact with walls, chimneys, hips and valleys etc. Repair around frames In case of an earthquake, all the contact points of the clay tiled roof of a building with its other structural elements, are prone to some damage, usually detachments or cracks, which should be treated and repaired immediately, as they are points of moisture penetration from the external environment into the roof. In this way, its wood structure is endangered, as well as the structural elements of the building that are located directly below it. These damages are effectively treated with powerful and flexible repair and sealing mortars with reliable waterproofing action on those joints, such as DUROFLEX POWDER (p. 249) of DUROSTICK, available in brick red color. In some cases, the destructive power of the earthquake may result from minor to major movement of the building frames (doors and windows), necessitating repair and restoration. Having ensured, by taking the necessary steps, that the frames are in the correct position (carpenter’s profession), our next move is to restore the damages that probably have resulted (detachments and cracks on the plaster) and then to seal them from all sides, both the interior and exterior of the building. This work is very important both for aesthetic reasons as well as for the sake of creating an efficient moisture barrier that will prevent its penetration indoors, significantly improving the microclimate. The treatment of the wall coatings is done with special flexible, non-shrinking cementitious repair products {SUPER FLEX POWDER (p. 269), D-66 REPAIR (p. 238) or ULTRALIGHT PUTTY (p. 276)}. The restoration of the detached plaster is made with the fast setting white repair plaster D-32 (p. 235), once it is fortified with D-20 (p. 233). Then proceed to the diligently seal around the frames, in their contact with wall surface. This sealing can be done effectively by using special elastomeric sealants such as DS POLYMER available in 32 colors (p. 242), DUROFLEX-PU (p. 249), ACRYLIC CAULK (p. 274), but also with the flexible, fiber-reinforced cementitious sealant for cracks from 1-15mm SUPER FLEX POWDER (p. 269). Any of them will complete the task efficiently and ensure the seals’ longevity, without problems, failures, or damage.
