88 Repair & Renovation Guide Dealing with damage caused by an earthquake away from the load-bearing structure of the building does not necessarily require the involvement of an engineer in the control phase and the selection of solutions for their restoration. We adopt the appropriate strategy each time, which includes the products-materials that we are going to use, depending on: • The type of structure element, • The materials from which it is made, • The extent of the damage, • Our aesthetic and functional requirements for the result of its repair and restoration. The crack repairs in concrete elements can be done using epoxy resins {D-33 (p. 235), D-38 (p. 235)} as explained in another part of this section. It can also be done with the use of specially made reinforced mortars that have the appropriate specifications for this type of repair: D-55 (p. 237), DUROFIX (p. 248), DS-240 (p. 243), DS-244 POWER MORTAR RESIN (p. 243), DS-245 POWER MORTAR RAPID (p. 244) or DS-247 (p. 244). Both the repair and restoration of plastered surfaces, in which either cracks or disintegrations and detachments have been created, are done with a series of special repair products that cover any requirement: D-32 (p. 235), D-42 ONE COAT (p. 236), D-66 REPAIR (p. 238), SUPER FLEX POWDER (p. 269), depending on the case and the extent of the damage. If the cracks are many but the plaster is still well anchored (it did not hollow), then it is recommended to completely coat over the wall surface with MEGAFIX (p. 261) or HYDROSTOP PLASTER ELASTIC (p. 258), but only after it is determined that the paint is in good standing and sufficiently sound. If there are some spots where the paint has deteriorated or is peeling off, sand the surface with No60 sandpaper and apply the flexible and multipurpose mortar MEGAFIX (p. 261) in two coats (one to cover the cracks and one to finish and to create a protective coat for years to come). Complete the repair by painting the wall with elastomeric, waterproof paints, such as D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239) or THERMOELASTIC COLOUR (p. 270) of DUROSTICK. Alternatively, provide crack protection of the surfaces, by using the crackproof organic coat in paste form BASECOAT THERMO (p. 230), reinforced with the fiberglass mesh DS-4160 (p. 247). Top coat with either plaster in paste form, HYDROSTOP ACRYLIC PLASTER FINE (p. 257) or HYDROSTOP SILICONE PLASTER (p. 259). If it is desired to achieve, in addition to crack-proofing, sound proofing, waterproofing, thermal and vibration protection, after the stages of the scratch the base coat, we apply the multipurpose paste dB BLOCK (p. 240) and complete the application, as described on page 75 of this of the manual.
