78 Repair & Renovation Guide EARTHQUAKE: RENDERS & PLASTERS special subjects Check, repair and restore standard brick wall with cracks in the connection points with the load-bearing structure The magnitude of the damage caused by an earthquake, at the joint between the brickwork (brick wall) and the load-bearing structure (column or beam of concrete, stone, or other material), can be a spot problem (usual) or a total problem (less common). Widen the crack to the full depth of the plaster in order to determine if there are breaks (broken bricks) underneath, along the crack. If bricks are broken, then it is necessary to remove the plaster and proceed with the replacement of the broken bricks or, in some cases, with the reconstruction of the entire wall. The bonding of the bricks that will replace the broken ones should be done with a strong bonding cement mortar, such as the fortified building mortar D-31 (p. 234). Continue by removing the plaster in the joint between the brick wall and load-bearing element (column/beam) in its entire depth, and to a width of at least 15cm on either side. Dust and soak the exposed part of the wall with the acrylic emulsion additive for mortars, D-20 (p. 233), diluted 1:1 with water. Before the emulsion fully cures, encase a 25cm strip of the fiberglass mesh DS-1090 (p. 242) with the fiber-reinforced scratch/base coat plaster D-40 (p. 236), and plaster the entire section to be repaired as such. Ideally, the same process is followed on both sides of the wall. Then, on the newly plastered surface, apply a final coat of plaster which can be the water repellent top coat plaster D-41 (p. 236), or for even greater flexibility, use the flexible, multipurpose mortar for repair and waterproofing of wall surfaces MEGAFIX (p. 261). The repainting of the repaired section, or even more correctly, the repainting of the entire surface of the specific wall, depending on its location, interior or exterior wall of the building, can be done by choosing the appropriate paint from the wide range of paints that DUROSTICK has available at your disposal. If it is desired to achieve, in addition to crack-proofing, sound proofing, waterproofing, thermal and vibration protection, after the stages of the scratch the base coat, we apply the multipurpose paste dB BLOCK (p. 240) and complete the application, as described on page 77 of this of the manual.
