Repair & Renovation Guide 75 Restoration of hairline cracks in renders/plasters The presence of hairline cracks in rendered/plastered wall surfaces constructed with brick, concrete, stone, aircrete, drywall, cement board, or other material, after an earthquake is a normal occurrence, of a greater or a lesser extent. The proper course of action is to first identify the problem and resolve it as soon as possible under the remediation and repair of wall surfaces protocols after we first complete the restoration of other serious damages that the earthquake may have caused. If the damage is of a small extent, it can be repaired with appropriate sealing-repair products, such as ULTRALIGHT PUTTY (p. 276), SUPER FLEX POWDER (p. 269). However, in case the cracks cover a large area, it is recommended to protect the lining with WATERPROOF MORTAR (p. 273), the flexible waterproofing mortar for walls, and then repaint them with the waterproofing elastomeric paint D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239) or the thermo ceramic energy efficient paint THERMOELASTIC COLOUR (p. 270). In cases where the wall has many repair points (spot repairs) and if the stability of the surface is verified, it is recommended to completely recoat it with the multipurpose, innovative flexible repair mortar MEGAFIX (p. 261). It creates a strong and water repellent coating of wall protection, which prevents the appearance of cracks in the event of a future low-intensity earthquake. Another solution is the crack protection of the wall surfaces, by using the crackproof organic coat in paste form BASECOAT THERMO (p. 230), reinforced with the fiberglass mesh DS-4160 (p. 247). Top coat with either plaster in paste form, HYDROSTOP ACRYLIC PLASTER FINE (p. 258) or HYDROSTOP SILICONE PLASTER (p. 259). Let’s not forget another technical solution. One that provides, in addition to crack-proofing, sound proofing, waterproofing, thermal and vibration protection. That solution is the use of the multipurpose paste dB BLOCK (p. 240), which is applied to the entire surface in a thickness of 2-3mm and then either paint over it with elastomeric paint, such as D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239) or THERMOELASTIC COLOUR (p. 270), both available in hundreds of colors. Alternatively, coat the repaired and coated surface(s) with a flexible top coat plaster, such as HYDROSTOP PLASTER ELASTIC (p. 258), HYDROSTOP ACRYLIC PLASTER FINE (p. 257), or HYDROSTOP SILICONE PLASTER (p. 259). For a perfectly smooth finish, and mainly for interior spaces, skim coat after 2-3 days, using the flexible putty STUCOFIX ELASTIC PUTTY (p. 268). The following day, paint with the ecological emulsion paint SUPER ECO (p. 269), available in hundreds of colors. Alternatively, apply directly over the surface of dB BLOCK, the microcement in paste form DS-258 DECO MICRO FLEX (p. 245), or the resinous decorative cement mortar of fine finish DS-259 DECO MICRO RESIN (p. 246), for the creation of unique surface stylings.
