TERM DEFINITION Glossary Terrace/roof parapet The outer part of the roof/terrace - usually vertically structured on the roof surface. It can be made of reinforced concrete, brick with a coating (plaster, paint etc.), bare or lined with some material (tiles, marble, or other). Thermo ceramic energy efficient paint Advanced new technology and top-quality elastomeric, reflective paint. Its composition contains glass microspheres, which give it excellent reflective properties and dispersion in the environment of the solar (thermal) radiation they receive. This paint is also certified as ‘Cool’, when the light reflectance it presents exceeds 80%. Water repellent plaster Plaster with water repellent properties. Prevents the entry of rainwater (or from another source) into its mass. It is not completely waterproof which means that it is not suitable for permanent immersion in water. Water vapor liquefaction The conversion of water vapor that is in gaseous form into water droplets that settle on the surfaces. Water vapor permeability of products (breathable product) Breathable material (synonym: water vapor permeable material). It is the material that allows the air and water vapor molecules it usually carries to penetrate its mass and move from one side of it to the other (e.g., a surface made of it), without much difficulty. The breathability of the material (in construction) is an ideal condition, as it protects against liquefaction, the creation of mold, and black spots on interior surfaces. ‘Cool’ paint or ‘Cool’ material Material and/or product with increased values of reflectivity against solar radiation and high values of emission factor in infrared. Such a product contributes to the reduction of surface temperatures and consequently to lower interior temperatures and energy consumption of the building, while at the same time it contributes to the treatment of the thermal island phenomenon and to the improvement of the thermal climate of the cities. The parameters whose values characterize a product as ‘cool’ are the thermal reflectivity (SR), the emission factor (e), the composite reflectance index (SRI), and the thermal conductivity (λ).
