Glossary TERM DEFINITION Enamel paint Solvent or water-based enamel paint for application on wood and metal surfaces. Dilute with enamel paint solvent or water (for the corresponding waterbased product). Easily applied on properly prepared and primed surfaces. Energy upgrade of a building With the term ‘Energy Upgrade of a Building’, we refer to all the interventions that are done in and on it, in order to reduce its energy consumption for heating and cooling. The energy upgrade may include interventions - improvements in the thermal insulation or waterproofing of the walls or floors of the building, installation of thermal insulation door and window frames, replacement of the boiler or water heater, or both, and much more. Expansion joints (of a lining) A special joint of suitable width, around the perimeter but also per 16-20m2 on exterior surfaces of some lining, which is filled with a special, very flexible product. Created to absorb surface stresses due to expansions and contractions caused by temperature variations, thus protecting the lined surface from peeling or cracking. Expansions and contractions The expansion and contraction of structural elements are due not only to changes in the temperature of their environment, but also to changes in the temperature of the elements themselves. Fiber-reinforced mortar Mortar that contains in its composition polypropylene fibers, which prevent the formation of shrinkage cracks during drying. The fibers improve the resistance of the mortar to impact and surface abrasion, as well as its consistency during and after applying it. Geotextile It is a plastic ‘fabric’ made of burlap. ΄Allows for the passage of water and air, while it does not ΄allow ΄ the soil to pass below its surface, acting as a filter. Normally used in planted surfaces for uninterrupted flow of irrigation or rainwater to the drainage pipes. Ideal for applications in pots and planters of all sizes, as well as in roof gardens. Available in rolls, it is lightweight and easy to install. Grouting of a lined surface The application of a special product (grout) in the gaps (joints) between the elements that compose the lined surface. Hairline/capillary cracks Shrinkage cracks are usually observed in wall coatings, painted walls, concrete and other surfaces. In most cases, they are superficial and presumably harmless. However, if left unchecked for long periods of time, they form networks with each other, which facilitate the ingress of environmental moisture in the substrates and consequent damage to them. Improving additive emulsion Additive for strengthening the properties of cement mortars and lime-based mortars (plasters). Usually available in liquid form, but it is also available in powder form. Increases the flexibility, adhesion, water tightness, and mechanical strength of mortars. Add it to the mixing water of the mortars/plasters, depending on the application and the desired improvement.
