Glossary TERM DEFINITION Clips (mechanical support for lining elements) Otherwise, ‘wall ties’. They are steel strips whose ends have been bent into an L-shape. The edges end in tips, so they are easy to install with the help of a hammer. The wall ties strap the wall to its lining (tiles, stone, marble, granite, etc.). Different types of wall ties are also used for securing marble slabs at a height of more than 2.5 meters above ground (check local and national building codes). Concrete Concrete is a mixture of mineral aggregates, water, binders, and improving additives (emulsions, plasticizers, etc.), where the binder is cement. Reinforced concrete is one that is combined with steel reinforcement bars (rebars) when applied to structural and load-bearing elements (slabs, columns, etc.). Corrosion inhibitor A corrosion inhibitor is a chemical component that reduces the corrosion rate of the element to which it is applied, usually a metal or metal alloy. Coved skirting Coved-constructed skirting of small width is usually created by using cement mortar along the junction of horizontal and vertical building surfaces (e.g., concrete slab of a roof with a wall adjacent to it). Aims to remove rainwater and prevent it from penetrating the substrate. Dehumidifier / Moisture collector A device that by chemical or electromechanical method removes moisture from the surrounding space in which it is placed and renders it in the form of water. Reduces the relative humidity indoors, improving their microclimate. Drainage channel for water The ‘path’ by which water collected at a point or surface flows away from it. For buildings: leaders and gutters, wells and sewer networks of rainwater. Drainage zone (of a building, basin, planted space etc.) The zone (area) that exists or that is created with our intervention using different materials (such as gravel, geotextile, etc.). It aims to facilitate the passage of water (irrigation, rain) to the drainage channels (ditches, sewers) and always away from the structural elements, so that it does not cause damage or deterioration in them. Ecological paint Paint that is friendly to the user and the environment, during the application phase, but also after it. It is ECOLABEL certified (www.ecolabel.eu). Efflorescence and blisters Efflorescence (white powder, blisters) on plaster, concrete, or skimmed surface. It is the accumulation of crystalline salts on the surface. White in form, unsightly stains that alter the appearance of surfaces. It occurs when watersoluble salts that coexist in the composition of the cementitious material, rise to its surface through networks of capillary cracks that have been created in it. Elastomeric waterproofing coat A waterproofing coat of a surface made of elastomeric products. 294 Repair & Renovation Guide
