156 Repair & Renovation Guide Problems with wood and metal surfaces 8.11 Worn out wood frames, doors, windows etc. SOLUTION CAUTION: Check for the extend of the damage and decide for their repair or their replacement. • If they are to be repaired, first identify the cause of the damage (moisture penetration, warping, cracks, peeling of enamel or varnish coatings etc.) and in each case apply the appropriate repair solution, dealing with the problems in the correct order. • In case the existing varnish or enamel coating has peeled off or is in poor condition, it is recommended to remove them completely by mechanical means or by using a strong corrosive product, such as D-26 (p. 234). Once the removal of the existing coatings is completed, strip the wood surfaces from any protection. Thus, treat them as new, following the steps as described in the subsequent sections: Coating with varnish or painting with enamel, depending on the aesthetics and the desired color. • In both subsequent sections, it is recommended to apply on the wood surface either the clear impregnating wood preservative DUROXYL WOOD PROTECTION/CONDITIONER (solvent-based) (p. 253) or DUROXYL AQUA TOTAL WOOD PROTECTION (p. 253), for protection against wood-boring insects, fungi, mold, blue spots and rot. Paint with varnish • Seal holes and cracks, if needed, with the acrylic wood putty of 15 wood colors DUROWOOD (p. 252). • Apply one to three coats of impregnation colored stain DUROXYL ΑQUA (p. 253) or DUROXYL (p. 252), depending on the desired color and the type of wood. • For even greater protection against aging and adverse weather conditions, especially the intense sunlight on external surfaces, but also to maintain its color, it is recommended to apply one or two coats of the decorative and protective varnishes MARINER AQUA (p. 261) or MARINER (p. 261) (gloss finish), DUROLAC AQUA (p. 249) or DUROLAC (p. 249) (satin or gloss finish). Paint with enamel paint • Seal holes and cracks, if needed, with the acrylic wood putty of 15 wood colors DUROWOOD (p. 252) or with STUCOFIX putty (p. 268). • Prime the surface with VELATURA (p. 276) or VELATURA AQUA (p. 277). • Paint with solvent-based luxury enamel paint DUROLUX (p. 250) or DUROLUX AQUA (p. 250), suitable for wood and metal surfaces. 8.12 Fading and deteriorated image of garden and terrace wood furniture POSSIBLE CAUSES • Prolonged direct exposure of the wood furniture in adverse environmental and weather conditions, and especially sunlight • Proper maintenance was not followed SOLUTION • Sand the wood surface with coarse (No100) and then smooth it with fine (No180) sandpaper. • Once all the dust is thoroughly removed, apply TEAK OIL (p. 269) in 2 to 3 coats, without any dilution.
