Repair & Renovation Guide 155 8.7 Visible surface rust on metal surface POSSIBLE CAUSES • Humidity. • Aging of the material. • Poor substrate preparation. • Absence of corrosion protection. SOLUTION Examine whether the repair of the metal surface is feasible or it should be replaced. In the first case, proceed as follows: • Sand the surface thoroughly and remove the rust developed on it. Remove any residues with THINNER 101 (p. 270), clean the surface thoroughly and let it dry completely. Alternatively, for the rust removal, the use of the RUST REMOVER (p. 267) is recommended. • Seal voids and cracks, if any, with the 2 HOUR EPOXY ADHESIVE in putty form (p. 278). • Apply to the surface NATURAL RED LEAD (p. 279) and/or METAL PRIMER (p. 276) for adequate anticorrosion protection. • Paint with luxury enamel paint DUROLUX (p. 250) or DUROLUX AQUA (p. 250). 8.8 Rust on metal moving parts and difficult movement because of it SOLUTION • If there is surface rust, remove it using steel wool, sandpaper or grinder. Alternatively, for the rust removal, the use of the RUST REMOVER (p. 267) is recommended. • Then apply anti-corrosion and lubrication protection using the Long-lasting GREASE (p. 277) or by spraying the spots with the anticorrosive and lubricant spray RUST FREE (p. 267). 8.9 Peeling and detachment of paint from metal surfaces (doors, windows, railing gates etc.) POSSIBLE CAUSES • Aging of the paint in combination with adverse weather conditions. • Improper or defective substrate preparation. • Poor quality paint. SOLUTION • In cases of painting metal surfaces, the determining factor for durability is proper preparation. • Remove with emery cloth, sanding, or by mechanical means the rusted sections until a clean metal surface appears. Lightly sand the remaining surface. Remove the sanding residues with THINNER 101 (p. 270). Alternatively, for the rust removal, the use of the RUST REMOVER (p. 267) is recommended. For adequate anticorrosion protection apply the NATURAL RED LEAD (p. 279) and/or METAL PRIMER (p. 276). • Paint with the luxury enamel paint DUROLUX (p. 250) or DUROLUX AQUA (p. 250). 8.10 Failure - poor installation of wood lining or warping POSSIBLE CAUSES • Absence of expansion joints or failure of existing expansion joint. • Poor fitting of the wood lining with structure elements made of different material. SOLUTION • In case of existing expansion joints, remove the old sealant and clean well from dust and foreign objects. • Seal the joint(s) with the elastomeric sealant & adhesive for wood surfaces DUROWOOD DS POLYMER of 10 wood colors (p. 252). Use the same product to fill the necessary perimeter expansion joints created during the proper installation procedure.
