154 Repair & Renovation Guide Problems with wood and metal surfaces SOLUTION • Thoroughly clean the surface, remove dust and varnish residues. • Apply to the surface the impregnating color wood stain DUROXYL (p. 252) or DUROXYL AQUA (p. 253), which has waterproofing properties, and at the same time protecting the wood surface from sunlight. • Continue by applying one of the decorative and protective wood varnishes DUROLAC (p. 249), DUROLAC AQUA (p. 249), or (in environments with adverse conditions), MARINER (p. 261), MARINER AQUA (p. 261). 8.4 Penetration of the wood surface from wood-boring insects SOLUTION • Thoroughly clean and sand with sandpaper the wood surface to expose the extent of the infestation by the wood-boring insects and woodworm. • Apply in the penetration points of the wood surface the pesticide DYROXYL WOOD PROTECTION/CONDITIONER (p. 253) available in a convenient 120ml packaging, in order to eliminate the cause of the infestation. • Seal the holes with the acrylic wood putty DUROWOOD (p. 252), available in 15 wood colors, and once dry, sand the putty to get the required texture and evenness. • Apply on the entire surface the clear impregnating wood preservative DUROXYL WOOD PROTECTION/CONDITIONER (solvent-based) (p. 253) or DUROXYL AQUA TOTAL WOOD PROTECTION (p. 253), to protect against wood-boring insects, fungi, mold, blue spots and rot. 8.5 Peeling or damaged varnish or enamel paint with which the wood surface has been previously painted POSSIBLE CAUSES • Intense moisture loads. • Intense sunlight. • Poor previous substrate preparation or other cause. SOLUTION • Remove by mechanical means (putty knife, sandpaper etc.) or with the corrosive and remover for paints and varnishes D-26 (p. 234) the existing paint/varnish coatings. • Sand enough so as to expose the wood pores and the wood grain. Given that the removal of the paint is total, follow what is described in detail in PROBLEMSOLUTION 8.11. 8.6 Damage caused to the wood surface from nails, screws or other objects inserted in it SOLUTION • Remove from the surface nails, screws or other objects that have damaged the wood. • Clean the surface well, fill the holes with the acrylic wood putty DUROWOOD (p. 252), available in 15 wood colors, and once dry, sand well to get the required texture and evenness. • To change the color, apply one to three coats of impregnating color wood stain DUROXYL ΑQUA (p. 253) or DUROXYL (p. 252). • In case we do not want to change the color of the wood surface, apply the water repelling - waterproofing agent for wood surfaces NANO PROOF WOOD DS-350 (p. 262).
