Repair & Renovation Guide 153 8.1 Mold growth or black spots on a wood surface POSSIBLE CAUSES • The wood surface/structure has remained without proper maintenance for a long time. • Its exposure to exterior environmental conditions has caused the varnish to crack, the subsequent penetration of moisture into the wood mass and the growth of microorganisms and mold. SOLUTION • Clean the surface thoroughly with the mold and mildew remover D-95 CLEANER (p. 240), rinse well and allow for it to dry. Continue with (light) sanding, until the pores of the wood are revealed. Alternatively, and if there is no time for the wood to dry after the cleaning process, or it is not possible to use the special cleaner, sand well with coarse (No100) and then with fine sandpaper (No180), until the pores of the wood are revealed. In both cases, remove the dust thoroughly. In the case of a painted surface where the paint has failed (burst, peeled, disintegrated), remove the paint by sanding or by using the corrosive and remover for paints and varnishes D-26 (p. 234). Given that the removal of the paint is total, follow what is described in detail in PROBLEM-SOLUTION 8.11. 8.2 Existence of small or deeper cracks in the wood surface POSSIBLE CAUSE Drying up and aging of wood. SOLUTION • Sand the surface thoroughly to reveal the extent of the damage. • If the surface is painted, remove the paint from the affected section. For complete paint removal, follow what is described in detail in PROBLEM-SOLUTION 8.11. • Check for possible cracks and holes on the wood surface. • Then, putty the cracks with the acrylic wood putty DUROWOOD (p. 252), and once dry, sand the putty to get the required texture and evenness. Staining wood • Apply to the surface the impregnating color wood stain DUROXYL (p. 252) or DUROXYL AQUA (p. 253), which has waterproofing properties, and at the same time protecting the wood surface from sunlight. • Continue by applying one of the decorative and protective wood varnishes DUROLAC (p. 249), DUROLAC AQUA (p. 249), or (in environments with adverse conditions), MARINER (p. 261), MARINER AQUA (p. 261). Painting wood with enamel paint • Prime the surface with VELATURA (p. 276) or VELATURA AQUA (p. 277). • Paint with luxury enamel paint DUROLUX (p. 250) or DUROLUX AQUA (p. 250). 8.3 Discoloration and damage on the wood surface by exposure to the harmful ultraviolet solar radiation or exposure to high temperatures • Sand the surface thoroughly to expose the pores of the wood and to reveal the extent of the damage.
