Repair & Renovation Guide 135 SOLUTION • Remove damaged, by mold and moisture, items and care for the proper ventilation of the space in the future. If that is not feasible, place a dehumidifier or the moisture collector WATERTRAP (p. 273). • If the surfaces of the space are going to be repainted, it is advisable to choose paint with durability against mold. Prime the surface with the micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX (p. 230) and paint with the fungi and mold resistant acrylic paint BATHROOM & KITCHEN (p. 279). 5.7 Unpleasant odors in the basement SOLUTION • Ventilate the space properly and carefully clean the surfaces of the mold and the black spots with the mold & mildew remover D-95 CLEANER (p. 240). Rinse with plenty of water and allow for them to dry thoroughly. • Remove damaged, by mold and moisture, items and care for the proper ventilation of the space in the future. If that is not feasible, place a dehumidifier or the moisture collector WATERTRAP (p. 273). 5.8 Detachment of concrete sections and exposure of the steel reinforcement (rebar) which has rusted POSSIBLE CAUSE Moisture penetration in the concrete mass causes gradual deterioration (carbonation - erosion) while causing corrosion of the steel reinforcement that is embedded in it. In some cases, the corrosion of the steel (rebar) is so advanced that its volume increases, resulting in rising pressure and breakage of pieces of the concrete that exposes the steel reinforcement which further accelerates the corrosion. SOLUTION • First remove the decayed and broken concrete elements, and then remove with a wire brush and/or RUSΤ REMOVER (p. 267) the rust on the exposed rebar. Once clean, apply on the rebar(s) the cementitious corrosion inhibitor RUST FREE POWDER (p. 267). • Repair the damage with the appropriate fiber-reinforced mortar. Depending on the size of the damage, choose one of the repair mortars: D-55 (p. 237) for thicknesses up to 2cm, DS-245 POWER MORTAR RAPID (p. 244) or DS-247 (p. 244) for thicknesses up to 4cm, DUROFIX (p. 248) or DS-244 POWER MORTAR RESIN (p. 243) for thicknesses up to 6cm. CAUTION: In some cases, the damage has progressed to such an extent that it cannot be treated with just a repair and the deteriorated elements must be reconstructed anew. All extensive concrete damage must be checked by an engineer to safeguard the structural adequacy of the building. 5.9 Moisture (salt stains and droplets) on the walls and floors of the basement POSSIBLE CAUSE Rising damp. SOLUTION • Remove any loose sections of plaster or coatings and thoroughly clean the surface. • Apply HYDROSTOP WALL (p. 259) or HYDROSTOP WALL PRO (p. 259) with the perforation method (drilling holes on the wall at specific intervals, p. 116-117), in order to block rising damp. • Continue with the repair of the remaining components.
