130 Repair & Renovation Guide Problems with the roof 4.12 Deterioration and damage to fascias and overhangs of the roof or balcony with exposure of the steel reinforcement in some cases SOLUTION • Inspect the area carefully to identify the cause or causes that have led to the damage. • Proceed with the necessary actions to eliminate the causes identified. • Remove from the affected area dust, loose sections and foreign objects. • If the steel reinforcement is exposed, remove the rust (if any) with a wire brush or with the RUST REMOVER (p. 267), and then apply to the steel reinforcement and around it the cementitious corrosion inhibitor for rebar protection RUST FREE POWDER (p. 267). • For the repair select one of the resins and fiber-reinforced repair mortars: D-55 (p. 237) for thicknesses of up to 2cm, DS-245 POWER MORTAR RAPID (p. 244) for thicknesses of up to 4cm or DS-247 (p. 244) for thicknesses of up to 4cm, DUROFIX (p. 248) or DS-244 POWER MORTAR RESIN (p. 243) for thicknesses of up to 6cm. • Complete the repair with the fast setting white repair plaster D-32 (p. 235) or with the water-repellent one coat plaster D-42 ONE COAT (p. 236), fortifying them with the addition of the acrylic emulsion additive for mortars D-20 (p. 233). For extended damage, reinforce them with the fiberglass mesh DS-1090 (p. 242). • Stabilize the surface with the micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX (p. 230) or the SOLVENT-BASED PRIMER (p. 276). • Paint the surface, ideally with the 100% acrylic paint 10 YEARS WARRANTY (p. 281), or the elastomeric and sealing paint D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239) or with the thermo ceramic energy efficient paint THERMOELASTIC COLOUR (p. 270). All the paints mentioned fully cover hairline cracks and prevents their reappearance. 4.13 Detachment of marble on interior or exterior wall, roof floor or parapet wall POSSIBLE CAUSES & SOLUTION, as described in PROBLEM - SOLUTION 6.6. 4.14 Detached bricks from parapet walls or other parts of the wall surface located on the roof SOLUTION • Remove broken or detached bricks and debris from the mortar or plaster that the bricks were probably coated with. • Build the new bricks in place with strong, fiber-reinforced mortar, D-31 (p. 234) or with traditional mortar, reinforced with polypropylene fibers DUROFIBRE (p. 248) and the addition of improving emulsion for mortars D-20 (p. 233), DUROSTOP (p. 252) or DUROMAX (p. 251). • Apply a new scratch coat and a base coat using D-40 (p. 236) for both and complete the repair with a topcoat plaster/render. Select either the fast setting white repair plaster D-32 (p. 235) or the flexible, multipurpose repair mortar ΜΕGAFIX (p. 261). Complete the repair by painting the roof parapet walls with high quality acrylic paint, such as the 100% acrylic paint 10 YEARS WARRANTY (p. 281) or the elastomeric and sealing paint D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239) or with the polyurethane - acrylic hybrid paint DUROPAINT-PU (p. 251).
