Repair & Renovation Guide 123 3.1 Grout disintegration on wall and/or floor surfaces lines with tiles POSSIBLE CAUSES The ingress of moisture and contaminants due to the lack of grout waterproofing may have led to their cracking and disintegration. SOLUTION • Remove the existing grouts using the GROUT SCRAPER (p. 280). • Thoroughly clean the area of the grout joints. In case moisture has penetrated into the substrates of the lining, allow for some time to pass (a few days) so the moisture can be released into the atmosphere. • Regrout the surface with: The FLEXIBLE & OIL REPELLENT GROUT (p. 278), the epoxy grout DUROPOXY (p. 251), the DUROGROUT CEMENTITIOUS tile grout Fine (1-10mm) (p. 275) or the CEMENTITOUS grout Ultrafine (0-3mm) (p. 275). When using cementitious grouts, waterproof them with D-16 HYDROSTOP (p. 232). 3.2 Detached, cracked or destroyed tiles POSSIBLE CAUSES One or more wall or floor tiles may become loose or cracked or damaged or detached due to moisture penetration in the substrate, shock, vibration or adhesive failure, or other mechanical stress, earthquake or other cause. SOLUTION • Carefully remove the loose tile/s and then, if possible, to reinstall the very same tile(s), remove the adhesive and grout from the substrate and the back of the tile(s). The GROUT SCRAPER (p. 280) will greatly facilitate in this procedure. Allow some time (depending on the situation) to defuse the potential moisture present in the substrate. • Coat the back of the detached tile(s) (or the new ones that will replace the detached ones) with the high performance, deformable cementitious tile adhesive, GOLD (p. 256). Alternatively, if it was not possible to completely remove the remnants of the existing adhesive, use the waterproof liquid tile adhesive No37 (p. 279). • Regrout the surface and waterproof as mentioned in previous sections. 3.3 Sealant failures for bathroom fixtures and exposed plumbing (e.g., floor drains), in their contact with the finished surfaces and presence of mold on the surface and/or on the mass of the sealant SOLUTION • Carefully remove the existing sealant. • Thoroughly clean the surfaces where the sealant was applied, and let them dry. • Reseal with the sealant of choice, such as the mold resistant SILICONE (p. 281). Alternatively, the application of the multipurpose elastomeric sealant & adhesive DS POLYMER of 32 colors (p. 242) is recommended. 3.4 Mold and black spots on the ceiling of the bathroom or the kitchen POSSIBLE CAUSES It usually forms from the accumulation of moisture and water vapour in the space and the lack of adequate ventilation.
