114 Repair & Renovation Guide Problems with exterior wall surfaces 1.8 Disintegration and cracks/breaks on outside corners of render or concrete walls, balcony fascias, on stairs, columns or beams in which the concrete is detached and the steel reinforcement (rebars) has been exposed etc. SOLUTION • Remove carefully all loose and detached sections and clean the surface thoroughly. • If the steel reinforcement of the column or beam has become visible, first remove any rust with a wire brush or use RUST REMOVER (p. 267) and continue by using the cementitious corrosion inhibitor for rebar protection RUST FREE POWDER (p. 267), after thoroughly soaking the concrete surface. • Depending on the extent of the damage, select one of the cementitious repair mortars: D-55 (p. 237) up to 2cm per coat, DS-245 POWER MORTAR RAPID (p. 244) up to 4cm per coat, DUROFIX (p. 248) or DS-244 POWER MORTAR RESIN (p. 243) up to 6cm per coat. For large surfaces, reinforce with the fiberglass mesh for plasters DS-1090 (p. 242). • Complete the repair with the flexible, multipurpose mortar ΜΕGAFIX (p. 261). • Prepare the surface with SOLVENT-BASED PRIMER (p. 272) and paint it, ideally, with the elastomeric and sealing paint D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 236), with the top-quality acrylic paint 100% ACRYLIC (p. 268) or with the 100% acrylic paint, for mold protection MINERAL SURFACE PAINT (p. 277). 1.9 Mold and dirt on exterior walls SOLUTION • Remove the mold with a brush (as much as possible) and then use the special mold & mildew remover D-95 CLEANER (p. 237). Rinse with plenty of water and allow for the surface to dry thoroughly. • Stabilize the surface with the micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX (p. 227) or with the SOLVENT-BASED PRIMER (p. 276). • Paint the surface with the paint of choice, such as the polyurethane-acrylic hybrid paint DUROPAINT-PU (p. 251), the 100% acrylic paint 10 YEARS WARRANTY (p. 281), the 100% ACRYLIC (p. 273) with the 100% acrylic paint, for mold protection MINERAL SURFACE PAINT (p. 281). 1.10 Existence of moisture in wall surfaces due to rising damp POSSIBLE CAUSES • Aquifer level • Inadequate waterproofing during the foundation or concrete pouring phase SOLUTION • Remove loose sections (if any) and clean the surface thoroughly. If moisture has also affected the render (top and even base coat, as needed), remove the damaged sections until a sound and stable substrate is reached. • Apply HYDROSTOP WALL (p. 259) or HYDROSTOP WALL PRO (p. 259) with the perforation method (drilling holes on the wall at specific intervals, p. 116-117), depending on the extent of the problem. • Continue with the repair of the render coats with either D-32 (p. 235), or D-40 (p. 236) as scratch coat and D-42 ONE COAT (p. 236), depending on the thickness of the repair, all fortified with the acrylic emulsion additive for mortars D-20 (p. 233). • Prime and paint as in the previously mentioned.
