Repair & Renovation Guide 111 1.1 Intense moisture problems evident from black stains and weathering close to the ground of an exterior wall at ground level POSSIBLE CAUSES • Bouncing rain • Rising damp SOLUTION • Remove the deteriorated sections, thoroughly clean and prepare the surface throughout the width and height at which the damage occurs. • Stabilize the substrate using the micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX (p. 230) or for the SOLVENT-BASED PRIMER (p. 276). • If there is a crack between the wall and floor surface, seal it with the elastomeric polyurethane sealant DUROFLEX PU (p. 249) after priming all the surfaces with the specific primer PRIMER PU (p. 263). • Apply the flexible and fiber-reinforced brushable waterproofing mortar D-1 FLEX (p. 231), or the flexible and brushable waterproofing mortar HYDROSTOP WATERTANK (p. 260) in two coats with a difference of 2-3 hours between coats, ideally applied at a height of 1530cm from the ground up or more, depending on the extend of the damage. In any case, the waterproofing coating(s) must extend at least 20-30cm higher than the perimeter of the existing damage. • The following day prime the repaired sections and proceed with repainting the entire, or a section of the surface with the 100% acrylic paint 10 YEARS WARRANTY (p. 281), with the polyurethane-acrylic hybrid paint DUROPAINT-PU (p. 251), with the elastomeric and sealing paint D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239), with the top-quality paint 100% ACRYLIC (p. 273) or with the 100% acrylic paint, for mold protection MINERAL SURFACE PAINT (p. 281). NOTE: In case the problem is identified as rising damp, please also consult the PROBLEM-SOLUTION 1.10. 1.2 Hairline cracks on exterior rendered walls (≤ 0.6 mm) SOLUTION • Once the stability of the surface is established, remove the deteriorated parts, thoroughly clean and prepare the surface throughout its entirety. • Prepare the surface by using the micromolar stabilizer AQUAFIX (p. 230) or with SOLVENT- BASED PRIMER (p. 276). • Repaint the entire surface, ideally with elastomeric and sealing paint D-80 HYDROSTOP ELASTIC (p. 239) or the thermo ceramic energy efficient paint THERMOELASTIC COLOUR (p. 270). Both paints fully cover hairline cracks and prevents their reappearance. NOTE: In cases with many surface cracks, before priming and painting, protect the surface by applying the flexible waterproofing mortar for wall surfaces WATERPROOF MORTAR (p. 273), to form a moisture-proof protective shield. 1.3 Hairline, and larger cracks on exterior rendered walls SOLUTION Α’ • Once the stability of the surface is established, thoroughly clean, remove the deteriorated sections (if any), and if necessary, widen the cracks (not the hairline ones). • Soak at sections, as needed, and repair the cracks using either special repair products, SUPER FLEX POWDER (p. 269) or D-66 REPAIR (p. 238) or, for larger cracked surfaces, repair with the flexible, multipurpose mortar MEGAFIX (p. 261).
