106 Repair & Renovation Guide PAINT After opening a can of paint to use, the paint becomes denser than its original texture, as the solvents it contains in its composition begin to evaporate. • To restore it to its original state, to make it workable, and to make it apply properly and easily, it is necessary to add the appropriate solvent to each paint (in water-soluble paints, just add water). Always follow the appropriate dilution ratio and not higher than that recommended in the instructions of the paint packaging (bucket). • Never mix two different solvents in the same paint. • When diluting the paint with its solvent, it should be done at room temperature. Too high or too low temperatures affect the density of the paint and deceive us as to the appropriate amount of solvent to be added to it. • Determine the density of the paint, depending on how it is applied. The density should vary, for example, depending on whether the paint will be applied with a paint brush, a paint roller, or a spray (with an airless spray gun). • Never leave the solvent container open, as the volatile materials in its composition evaporate very quickly. • Use the dilution agent of each paint product to properly clean the application tools. The choice of color is really important and must be made carefully. Factors that influence the choice of color are both our personality and the style we want to give to the space. The cool colors, the tints and shades of blue and green, give calm. The warm colors, the tints and shades of red and yellow, give warmth. When the furniture is characterized by a variety of colors, it is advisable not to use too many colors on the walls. Another important factor in choosing colors is the brightness of the space. In rooms with plenty of light, light colors look dull. In relatively dark rooms, select light colors to illuminate them. Also, light colors make the space look bigger. è I f you want to enlarge a space, choose lighter colors (fig. 1). è I f you want to make a space smaller, paint several of its surfaces with darker colors (fig. 2) è To raise the ceiling, paint it white, while (fig. 2) to lower it, choose a dark color (fig. 3). è I f you want to widen a room, choose light colors for the large sides and darker colors for the small ones (fig. 4). è I f you now want to narrow a room, paint its large sides with darker colors and the smaller ones with lighter ones (fig. 5). Dark colors, in addition to ‘shrinking’ the space, draw attention to the surface where they are applied. è I f you want to bring a wall closer, paint it darker than the others (fig. 6).
