Repair & Renovation Guide 105 The proper preparation of a surface (paint substrate) with the application of a suitable primer to it, ensures: è The stability of the paint substrate, è The increase of the grip properties of the substrate, è The reduction of the necessity for many coats of the final color, è The uniform result of the paint application on the finished surface, due to the consistent absorbency of the substrate as a whole, è The prevention of paint blistering after the application completion (application to plaster surfaces). Primers as products are divided in two major categories: •Water-based primers •Solvent-based primers It is common practice - when possible - to use water-based primers on the exterior and interior surfaces and solvent-based primers on exterior surfaces (due to odor).
