100 Repair & Renovation Guide PAINT An up-to-date toolbox, loaded with the necessary tools, along with tools for painting and a good ladder, is usually enough to successfully complete the task of painting surfaces. PAINT ROLLERS Available in various dimensions, shapes, and sizes. The cylinder itself can be fur, fabric, woven, microfiber or foam. Depending on the application, choose the appropriate roller that, as a mission, has to spread the paint evenly on the surfaces and to withstand many uses. For emulsion and acrylic paints, choose a branded, short pile fur roller. Available in 10-18 and 24cm long. To apply paint on rough surfaces, choose a full pile roller. For smooth surfaces, choose a short pile roller. For enamel and alkyd paints, as well as water and solvent-based varnishes, select the appropriate rollers for the specific applications. They are available in a variety of sizes and the cylinder can be made of synthetic or natural fiber, or polyester sponge. Styling rollers are also available in the market. All branded roller manufacturers have the ability to accept replacement rollers. Wash brand-new rollers with lukewarm water before use. Do not allow for paint rollers that are loaded with paint to «sit» for a long time, especially during your breaks. In order to avoid washing the roller every time you stop, wrap them in a plastic bag, after you have removed most of the paint from them. It is important not stop painting in the middle of the wall. Complete the painting of a surface as a whole and stop at its edge, to avoid paint lapping and two-tones. The roller should leave a uniform coat of paint or varnish, without splashing or running on the surfaces. When finished, wash with plenty of water until all traces of paint or varnish are removed from the pile of the roller. Dry it by rolling it and hang it to drain. The above information pertains to rollers used with watersoluble paints. Rollers used for applying varnishes or other solventbased products are more difficult to clean. Prefer to replace the used cylinder with a new one (spare cylinders are cheaper than the solvent) and thus avoid their ‘painful’ cleaning procedure with solvents. Gather the tools of the trade
